Legislative Report #1 of the 2006 Session of the Georgia General Assembly
The 2006 Session of the Georgia General Assembly started Monday, January 9th. Because this is the second year of the biennial session, all bills that were introduced last year are still active. The bills that remained on the Senate calendar for a vote last session were recommitted to the respective committees on Monday.
On Wednesday, the House Retirement Committee passed HB 391 out of the committee. HB 391 authorizes the circuit public defenders to enter the Judicial Retirement System. The bill is now in the House Rules Committee, chaired by Rep. Earl Ehrhart (Cobb County).
Also on Wednesday, the Governor gave the State of the State address where he promised to allocate $45 million to the Department of Corrections to increase the jail beds and reduce the backlog in the jail systems. He will also allocate $1 million to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to create a methamphetamine investigation unit. Finally, the Governor will add 67 juvenile probation and parole specialists to improve community-based services and reduce caseloads.
Here is a list of new criminal justice bills that have been introduced so far. |
